At the end of the programme participants will be able to:
- Advise management on OSH related issues relevant to the industry sector
- Identify, interpret and advise on key requirements of Irish OSH legislation, codes of practice and published guidance
- Carry out OSH risk assessments in collaboration with relevant stake holders Identify workplace hazards and assess associated potential risks in the workplace
- Evaluate the effectiveness of existing risk control measures and identify additional measures to reduce risks
- Advise on drafting relevant OSH Policies and review existing OSH policies to ensure currency Advise on drafting relevant Safe Work Procedures (SWP) and review existing SWPs to ensure effectiveness
- Conduct periodic reviews of an organisation’s OSH management system
- Identify and review systems of reporting and investigating workplace accidents and recommendations for the prevention of reoccurrences.
- Review the effectiveness of emergency planning systems in place with relevant competent persons
- Identify effective methods of communication of relevant OSH information across various levels in an organisation Identify the key OSH training, information and instruction programmes required by law ensuring compliance
This programme is for:
Those with a professional interest in, or involved in the application of occupational safety and health at work. Therefore, participants are required to be working in the area of OSH or Management, or intending to move into this field.
This Diploma is an ideal way to advance your skills if you hold a Certificate in OSH, have completed other training in this area of expertise or for OSH managers with a number of years’ experience, who would like to gain an accredited award.
Approach
A practical approach is used throughout the programme. Where OSH law is introduced, it is applied to workplace situations through case studies, case law, group exercises and various activities. Participants are encouraged to share and apply their industry knowledge and experience to workplace scenarios. The programme facilitates participant discussion on the various OSH subjects as they arise throughout the course thus ensuring greater understanding and application of the subject matter.

To achieve accreditation this course is assessed by written exam and submission of assignment:
- Two 3,500 – 4,500 word projects 40%
- Class participation and Learning journal 10%

Programme Facilitators
Kieran McKenna
Kieran holds a primary degree in Mechanical Engineering and Masters degree in both Engineering Design and Occupational Health & Safety Management. He is a Chartered Engineer and a practising environmental safety and health professional. He has over twenty years industry experience in senior environmental safety and health management roles. Kieran has been training in the occupational safety and health programme for over 10 years and has introduced students to the concepts of health and safety management systems, risk assessment and considerations impacting their effective implementation.
Liz Doyle Fleming
Liz holds a Bachelor of Science degree in OSH Management from UCD. She is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health since 2005 and is a practicing OSH practitioner working in a variety of industry sectors. Liz delivers OSH training to students at both academic level and to management/employees in-company. Her teaching style allows for the practical application of OSH theory to real life workplace situations thus maximising understanding and application in the workplace.
Liz's areas of expertise includes developing corporate OSH policy & policies, conducting reviews of OSH systems in place, advising on OSH safety management systems, reviewing the effectiveness of risk assessment systems and advising management on OSH best practice and application. She works with members of the Law Library in OSH related law cases and is a past President of the Medico-Legal Society of Ireland.
Darrell Fernandes
Darrell, a qualified electrician and electronics service technician, is an Ibec Academy trainer with extensive knowledge in the areas of Occupational Safety and Health Management, Emergency Management, Crisis Management, Business Impact Analysis, Business Continuity Planning, Management Systems Development, Coaching and Mentoring, Facilitation and Communication Skills.
He also worked as an instructor and member of the Defence Force’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) incident response panel and was a regular contributing columnist for the Health and Safety Review providing expert insight and analysis regarding all aspects of Occupational Safety and Health Management.
Elaine Bowers
Elaine holds a B.Sc. in Environmental Health, a M.Sc. in Applied Environmental Sciences, and a H.Dip in Safety, Health and Welfare at Work. She has a wide range of EHS experience across many different industry sectors including medical devices, technology, and property. She has worked as a tutor and guest lecturer in OSH for more than 15 years. She has previously worked in Ibec Employer Relations division (Knowledge Centre) advising across all sectors on Occupational Safety and Health ; and during that time gained a Diploma in Employment Law. She is now working in Ibec Academy as a Senior EHS Executive developing and co-ordinating existing and new OSH/EHS/ESG courses.
